If your husband had an affair?

and after it ended he wrote the mistress saying he will love her until the day he dies and it feels like a bereavement to lose her etc. It was a 3 page letter. Is that letting her down easy or could he have meant it? When I found out about the letter from her he wrote her a mail saying he just said all those things to let her save face. Did he mean that?
